About The Opportunity

Role Purpose: 

In a fast paced manufacturing environment, function as the Senior Metallurgist & Central Quality Support Laboratory Manager for the GKN Alamance Facility. Mentor the shop floor laboratories, central laboratory and thermal process manufacturing technicians for metallurgical inspection methods. Act as the metallurgical expertise to support the regional plants for issues related to materials, manufacturing processes, and warranty failure analysis.

Role will be based at the GKN Alamance location reporting to the facility Quality and Risk Manager, GKN Automotive Alamance, NC.

Key Responsibilities

Role Title:   Sr. Metallurgist and Quality Support Central Laboratory, GKN Automotive Mebane Facility.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

  • q

Manage the ALA central laboratory 3-shift operation that ensure conformance to specification for material and heat treat specifications.

  • q

Develop the laboratories, equipment and procedures to ensure compliance with GKN and customer requirements. Develop and execute capital expenditure programs as needed.

  • q

Manage calibration, and R&R of all laboratory test equipment

  • q

Coach and mentor the quality support technicians for laboratory processes. Ensure that current staff and new hires have a training plan for laboratory techniques. Maintain yearly training on key skills (metallography and microscopy)

Complete failure analysis activities including reporting of findings. Provide metallurgical analysis and support problem solving activities in cross functional teams. Network with company and external expertise as required.

Provide expert Metallurgical leadership for the Alamance, Sanford, and Roxboro facilities, thermal process engineers, quality engineering and customer warranty in support of Metallurgy, Induction Hardening, Carburizing, and Welding.

US facility auditor responsible for the following auditing requirements.

  • Toyota (TMC) Induction Hardening and Carburizing (Must complete process to become TEMA Certified Auditor)

     

  • Layer audits of the value stream laboratories to ensure compliance to customer and GKN specifications, internal procedures, documentation and training requirements

Monitor central lab performance with daily reporting of Key Performance Indicators.

Required Education and Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in heat treat operations or a combination of 5 years of formal metallurgical education and heat treat experience.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or related field (equivalent experience considered)
  • Automotive manufacturing experience a plus.
  • Strong technical background in endothermic carburizing and/or induction hardening a plus.

 

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Experience in a Quality Assurance role preferred

  • Lean Manufacturing experience preferred

 

Competencies: 

  • Have or commit to achieving AIAG-CQI-9 minimum requirement (Section 1, item 1.1)

  • 2 years of experience managing/supervising staff

  • Experience with MS Office Tools (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, etc.)
