About The Opportunity

Providing support to the General Counsel and legal support to the GKN Automotive Operations worldwide on all their legal matters, and to design implement and administer the business’ compliance programmes.

Key Responsibilities

Commercial and Disputes

  • Drafting and negotiating a wide range of commercial contracts and terms and conditions with customers and suppliers, including for the sale and purchase of goods and services.
  • Advising on and managing commercial disputes where they arise.  Engaging and managing external counsel where necessary.
  • Assisting with the creation, implementation and management of contracting systems and processes.

Compliance and Regulatory

  • Administration of the businesses’ compliance and training programmes, in areas such as Competition Law,  Anti-Bribery, Data Protection and Trade Sanctions.  Providing ad-hoc advice on a wide range of legal and compliance topics as they arise.
  • Delivering internal training on a variety of compliance topics.
  • Management of calls received through the businesses’ externally managed whistleblowing hotline.  Allocating calls to appropriate investigatory teams.  Maintaining oversight over internal investigations and providing written feedback to callers.  Introducing corrective actions where necessary.
  • Reviewing the outputs of automated export compliance screening to ensure that denied parties are not inadvertently dealt with.
  • Conducting or supervising internal compliance investigations

Other

  • Drafting and negotiation of technology related documentation (with support from IP specialists) including non-disclosure agreements, technology licenses, development agreements and agreements related to academic collaborations.
  • Providing ad-hoc advice on UK employment matters and supporting HR processes, investigations and disputes where necessary.
  • Advising (with support external counsel) on real estate transactions.

Skills/Experience Required

  • A qualified UK lawyer or an internationally qualified lawyer willing and with the aptitude to operate in the UK and internationally.
  • 1-4 years’ post-qualification experience, whether in a leading commercial law firm or in-house legal function.
  • Experience in commercial contracting is preferred, but is not mandatory.  Candidates with experience in any business-focussed legal area will be considered, including in particular Commercial, Compliance & Regulatory, Corporate, Disputes and Litigation or Intellectual Property.
  • A strong academic background.
  • A willingness to broaden their skillset, become familiar with new areas of law and take on new challenges.
  • A desire to work in an international business and to become a well-rounded commercial in-house lawyer.
  • A full UK driving licence.
  • Language skills an advantage but not mandatory (English is the business language of GKN Automotive worldwide).

The role will be extremely varied in nature and is a perfect role for someone wanting to make their first move in-house, as it will give you the opportunity to experience a vast range of legal issues in a large international business, to take ownership of important legal and compliance projects and to develop well-rounded experience as a business lawyer and adviser.

The role will receive support from the rest of the GKN Automotive legal team (approx. 20 people), who located across Europe, the US and Asia.  There will be the need to travel occasionally, both domestically and (infrequently) internationally.

It is recognised that candidates applying from private practice will be unlikely to have experience in a number of these legal areas, and relevant training and support will be provided in all areas including those in which the candidate does not have any experience.
