The Engineer Lead (Cutter Design and Grinding) is primarily responsible for ensuring the contributions from multiple key functional areas within the business have a successful impact on the performance of those machining operations. Responsibilities include, but not limited to, supporting the resolution of production problems related to field (i.e. feeds, speeds, cutter geometry, holders, etc.), and developing and implementing quality control, maintenance programs, specifications or drawings, inventory control, and supplier pool. Supports and leads the journey to build a larger department on a national scale for GKN Aerospace.


Who you’ll work with

The Engineer Lead reports directly to Director of ETQ, Design & Lean and manages cutter grinding department operators as well as project teams and interacts with both internal and external customers as needed.

  • Manages the department and related projects, with responsibility of the Cutter Grind operator’s daily work assignments, and safety of equipment pertaining to cutter grinding.
  • Establishes cutter grinding standards, policies, procedures, and method/equipment trainings.
  • Interfaces with suppliers and other GKN sites concerning design problems, prints, delivery, quality, and price.
  • Develops verification/inspection methods of cutters prior to use. (i.e. program Zoller, shadow graph, etc.).
  • Works closely with the Engineering departments at our 4 locations to select or design and purchase cutting tools and holders for operations.
  • Provides technical guidance to CAD/CAM Engineers to improve surface finish, cycle times, cutter life, reducing costs and tool cutting strategies.
  • Oversees tool costs associated by each part number throughout our 4 locations by developing a method of collecting data, create/track actions to drive down costs, improve quality, and improve profitability. 
  • Implements methods to control cutting tool quality from internal machining or from suppliers.
  • Implements and manages cutting tool library in Team Center (i.e. generate models, assemblies, types, etc.).
  • Generates and manages historical cross-reference sheets that contain cutting performance of cutters related to material and equipment.
  • Determines and troubleshoots manufacturing processes at all levels of complexity by identifying and resolving manufacturing quality problems associated in related field.
  • Manages cutting tool related projects such as standardization, implementing cutter grinding in house, national scale and Aerospace NA desire to reduce costs by standardizing across all sites.
  • Instructs and mentors less experienced engineers, cutter grinding technicians, and manufacturing personnel.
  • Communicates and corresponds with company employees and management regarding progress with projects and cost reductions or improvements.
  • Approx. 40% travel for the first 2 years and <10% thereafter.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


About you

Required Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of experience in mechanical and/or manufacturing engineering with 2+ years of experience in machining.
  • Project management and/or team/department leadership experience required.
  • U.S. Person per ITAR regulations to comply with export compliance and site SSA requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Cutter Design & Grinding preferred.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering preferred.
  • Proficient computer skills NX, SAP, and TeamCenter preferred.
  • Proficient in the use of personal computer software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, MS Project).
  • Sound knowledge of manufacturing operations & strategies.
  • Ability to manage projects to completion and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent communication, organizational and teaming skills.
  • Experience working with diverse skill sets.
  • Good interpersonal team working skills with the ability to influence stakeholders.
  • Proactive in regard to new developments of expertise required
  • Self-motivated, resourceful, strong minded and committed.
  • Innovative toward all aspects of the job.
  • Flexible and capable of working in a complex environment.
  • GKN experience preferred.
