About The Opportunity

An exciting opportunity for a Technology Leader has become available at our world class Aerospace manufacturing site in Filton, Bristol.

The position will play a key role in leading the strategy for a technology theme and the development and industrialization of advanced technologies for the GKN Aerospace business into the Filton site.

Success in this role will contribute to wing components, assemblies and systems manufactured using new technologies being qualified for flight to deliver value for our customers. This role will lead a Technology Theme and an associated team on one or more major research projects and be accountable for on-time, on-cost, on-quality on-delivery.


 

Key Responsibilities
 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead teams in the investigation of entire value chains for specific value streams, products or areas of the business to identify opportunities for improvement and new approaches to maximise efficiency and deliver differentiating manufacturing capability.
  • Conduct research for specific technology projects to support fast and effective technology development and ensure project deliverables are met to time, quality and cost.
  • Engage and build relations with the GKN global technology organisation, GKN sites, customers, academia, research centres and suppliers as appropriate to maximise the speed and efficiency of development and the impact to our customers and the bottom line of the business.
  • Lead one or more integrated multi-functional team to develop processes, working closely with the business units, programme manager, manufacturing engineers and value streams to implement technology into production.
  • Take personal responsibility to manage assigned projects and tasks to time, quality and budget to ensure contributions achieve project milestone and deliverable dates, including technical, financial and gate reviews (business, Capex or TRL).
  • Regularly document research and development activities in technical reports, memos, procedures, specifications, invention disclosures and presentations to the highest standards to capture and communicate knowledge.
  • Generate and support internal and external communications to inform the business, current and prospective customers of technologies, projects and progress to promote awareness of GKN Aerospace capabilities and maintain our position as a technology leader.
  • Provide support to bids, proposals and funding applications, internally within GKN and externally for government funding, customer, supplier and partner collaborations or joint ventures. This shall include planning new projects, work packages, technical, schedule, cost, Work and Organisational Breakdown Structures.
  • Support the creation of a culture of innovation in their team, whilst being responsible for the creation and recording of intellectual property, supporting the technology team meetings and surpassing site targets and delivering world class differentiating technologies
  • Directly influence the identification of opportunities for improvement to continue to build and grow the effectiveness and efficiency of the Technology Team to quickly and successfully deliver technology our customer’s value.
  • Compliance with all risk assessments and company Environment, Health & Safety Procedures relevant to all work activities. Reporting of all accidents and near misses as per the company’s procedure and implementation of identified corrective actions. Maintain good standards of housekeeping in designated work area(s)
  • Champion “Export Control” compliance activities, ensuring you and where applicable, members of your team, adhere to the site “Technology Control Plan (TCP), guaranteeing compliance with Export Control Regulations, controls, training and systems

Qualifications and skills - Formal qualifications

Essential:

  • Engineering understanding, including ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and models (Assessment: Certificates & Interview)
  • Problem solving
  • Analytical capability (have performed numerical analysis, financial/engineering, potentially use of tools, MS Excel etc.)
  • Effective communication, well spoken English, able to clearly and concisely communicate ideas and information.

Desirable: 

  • Degree qualified (or equivalent) engineer qualification
  • Lean and Six Sigma, in particular statistical analysis and statistical process control (certified LSS greenbelt, Blackbelt or MBB, interview selection)

Specific Functional Capability, Knowledge and Skills required

Essential: 

  • Leadership- Demonstrated defining a vision and motivating a team to perform
  • Management- Demonstrated team performance, delivering to time quality and cost including direct line management and/or matrix management responsibility.
  • Demonstrate working from first principles to implement solutions including a methodical and logical approach to problem solving (interview, given a problem to demonstrate how they would work through it)
  • Experienced and successful team worker, works well with diverse range of team members and functions
  • Able to plan, monitor and control projects to time, quality and cost, including meeting the requirements of government, EU and customer funded programmes

Desirable:

  • Aerospace Experience in aero-structures components, assemblies and systems
  • Able to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications and demonstrated understanding of engineering tolerances and allowances.
  • Development of successful concepts through gated review processes including TRL’s to qualification and production realisation.
  • Knowledgeable about the whole value chain, from materials through design, part manufacturing and testing.
  • Able to generate and deliver high quality presentations and reports
  • Knowledge of Technology Readiness Levels and Manufacturing Readiness Levels and associated processes for planning, developing and assessment of technology maturation

Language Skills:

  • English essential
  • French desirable

Travel Requirements:

As required travel, mainly within the UK, potentially to facilities in Europe or further afield, to visit customers, suppliers, catapult centres, academia and GKN sites to support technology projects delivery.
