GKN aerospace is working in a set based multidisciplinary design environment. The design system is constantly evolving, integrating CAE tools to provide decision support in new and ongoing development programs. The use of topology optimization in aerospace structures has increased rapidly over the last years, although there are still challenges to include multidisciplinary criteria in the optimization process. Since the optimization method does not provide optimized geometries directly but helps to identify optimal load paths, one of the major challenges is to use the results to generate a design that can be produced with state-of-the-art manufacturing techniques. Currently, there are some manufacturing constraints that can be included in the optimization, but the subsequent geometry definition process is still not very efficient. It is therefore needed to develop a method to create a CAD model in standard format while following as close as possible the output of the optimization.

Assignment description

The thesis work will focus on  

  • Literature review

  • Familiarization with methods and tools currently used within GKN Aerospace

  • Explore and compare different topology optimization and geometry definition software available at GKN

  • Perform topology optimization to study an existing aerospace structural component considering the multidisciplinary constraints that correspond to such component

  • Interpretation of topology optimization results to support creation of CAD models and FE models.

The thesis work will be supported by appropriate design, solid mechanics and process engineers.

Target

  • Create a new design of a component that is lighter than the baseline but still fulfills functional requirements and can be produced using Additive Manufacturing techniques.

  • Deliver the new design as a CAD model in the standard software format used at GKN Aerospace (Siemens NX)

  • Set up and demonstrate a working approach

  • Determine preferred TO software to use and present pros and cons to support the conclusion

  • Document the results in a thesis Report. (English)

  • Present the summary and conclusions for an audience at GKN Aerospace. (English)

     

Qualifications

  • Master in mechanical engineering or similar including courses in meshing techniques, CAD and Additive manufacturing is recommended

  • Interest in structural optimization, CAD, additive manufacturing, and simulation

  • GKN would prefer if the student can perform most of the work on site at the R&T organization in Trollhättan
