About The Opportunity

The Process Engineering department within Research Centre Trollhättan is now looking for more Composite Engineers. We are currently expanding our research activities within the composite field and will build a new composite development and demonstration centre at Innovatum in Trollhättan.

The Research Centre is a part of the GKN Global Research and Technology organization at GKN Aerospace and currently we are 75 employees. We are located at GKN Aerospace Engine System site in Trollhättan and we have our laboratory at Innovatum. Process Engineering has the responsibility to develop advanced manufacturing processes for future generations of aero engines. The current department focus areas are

  • Free form additive manufacturing
  • Laser welding
  • Machining
  • Inspection
all with focus on automation.

 

Historically metallic materials have been dominating, but we see an increasing ambition in composites. Research Centre has developed composite technologies for about 10 years, and now we will build up the composite manufacturing process development capability also in Trollhättan. We work closely together with the design department and simulations department within the Research Centre. We also have continuous cooperation with the core engineering and production organizations. The work is organized in technology projects where we develop new product concepts and implement new processes in production. The department is currently 20 employees with a strong ambition to grow.

The department of Process Engineering now has an open position for a Research Engineer with the focus of developing automated composite processes for aero engine applications. The role will include building up the composite research lab for the purpose of demonstrating highly automated manufacturing.

You have a master or PhD degree with a competence profile in composites and is interested in working practically with equipment and process development. The role also involves close collaboration with researchers and research organizations within the field of composite materials and process. You will be part of a team that develops state-of-the-art composite manufacturing for aero engines.

Key Responsibilities
We are looking for a Research Engineer to our Research Centre with a strong competence in composite materials and process, to be responsible for composite processes in the department. You will also have a central role in building up the composite research lab, both specifying and developing equipment for automation. You will also take part in composite materials and process related tasks for our future Engine component designs, and lead work packages where we work together with our University partners on Research questions for composite manufacturing solutions.


Typical responsibilities:

  • Responsible for composite manufacturing processes within department R&T Process Engineering
  • Coordinating the development the processes and capabilities in composite research lab for automated processes with other partners
  • Project leader for technology development projects within R&T
  • Contribute with creativity and support colleagues in our technology teams, with the future possibility to becoming a team leader
  • Work package leader for research programs in corporation with Universities

 


The work is performed in internal technology development projects, technology demonstrators and in research projects often done in bilateral or multilateral collaboration with our GKN colleagues, industry and academic partners and customers.


Qualifications / Experience / Skills:

  • You are an engineer with an MSc or PhD degree in in Composites Process or Material Engineering or similar with at least 5 years of experience.

  • You have experience from manufacturing of prepreg and/or RTM products

  • You are skilled to lead technology projects in the field of composite processes

  • Experience of automation of composites is meritorious

  • You have a desire to work practically in the lab with both with process and equipment development

  • You have good ability to communicate and present plans and results internally as well as externally with our partners 

  • You have good social skills, the ability to create effective networks and can take on a technical responsibility role
