About The Opportunity

The Design Engineering department within Research Centre Trollhättan is now looking for more Composite Engineers. Currently we are expanding our research activities within the Composite area including production facilities at Innovatum in Trollhättan. The Research Centre in Trollhättan is a part of the Global Research and Technology organisation at GKN Aerospace and currently we are 75 employees. Primarily the employees at the department work with material selection, concept design and definition of new technology in aero engine modules. We work closely together with the two other Research departments Engineering Methods and Process Engineering. We also have continuous cooperation with the core engineering organisation responsible for ongoing product development programmes.  The work is organized in technology projects where we develop new product concepts and implement new design tools. The department is currently 20 employees and growing.


The department of Design Engineering now has an open position for a Materials & Process Engineer with emphasis on composite materials for aero engine applications. You are an Engineer with a strong competence profile in structural composites and is interested in working with materials and process related questions in Research & Development of composites. The role also involves close collaboration with researchers and research organizations within the field of composite materials. You will be part of a team to develop and build up state-of-the-art composite manufacturing for aero engines.

Key Responsibilities
We are looking for a Materials and Process Engineer to our Research Centre with a strong competence in composite design in general and emphasis on Aerospace application. You will work with materials and process related questions related to our future Engine component designs and lead work packages where we work together with our University partners on Research questions for composite and hybrid design solutions.

 Typically you will work with development of the next generation technologies for compressor and fan structures in composite and metallic materials. The work is performed in internal technology development projects, technology demonstrators and in research projects often done in bilateral or multilateral collaboration with our partners in the EU as well as in the USA. Your work will typically consist of:

  •  Selecting the best combination of materials for specific product applications.
  •  Specifying the design criteria [EF1] including tests of composite structures to fulfil design requirements
  • Assess structural integrity of the design by computations[EF2] 
  • Specifying requirements on the material and manufacturing process.
  • Working to avoid problems arising during the manufacturing process for the finished product
  • Helping to ensure that products comply with national and international rules and standards
  • Considering the cost implications of materials used and/or propose alternative solutions.

 The work will involve innovative research and Research Collaborations with University partners

Qualifications / Experience / Skills

  • You are an engineer with an MSc or PhD degree in Materials or Mechanical Engineering or similar with at least five years of experience within the field material and processes composites preferentially within Aerospace.
  • You can lead research projects in the field of composite design and materials for engine structures
  • You have the ability to identify and define the need for research within ongoing and future programs.
  • You have good ability to communicate and present plans and results internally as well as externally with our research partners 
  • You have a strong drive to explore materials and processes and to develop good design solutions.
  • You have good social skills, the ability to create effective networks and can take on a technical responsibility role  
  • You are proficient in English
