Work description.
• CAD semi-automated extraction from STL data
• Compare extracted CAD data with nominal models
• Compare aerodynamic performance data between geometries

Thesis targets:
• Familiarization with methods and tools currently used within GKN Aerospace.
• Set up and demonstrate a method developed for automated CAD models from optical scanner data
• Document the results in a thesis Report. (English)
• Present the summery and conclusions for an audience at GKN Aerospace. (English)
Project background:
At GKN it is important to understand how variations in manufactured blades and vanes are affecting the aerodynamic performance of our products. It is therefore of interest to efficiently be able to use measured data (from optical scanners that produce STL data) of blades and vanes for pressure drop calculations using CFD. A method is available at GKN to convert STL data to geometry data using ANSYS SpaceClaim. The main objective of this thesis work is to use this method on available STL data to produce geometry data of blades and vanes for CFD analysis. The achieved geometry data will be used in subsequent performance calculation using our standard analysis tools for meshing and CFD calculations.
Key Responsibilities
Recommended academic background: Engineering including courses in CAD (preferably NX), fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, programming.
