About The Opportunity

Engineering Methods is a department within Research Center Trollhättan that consist of the three departments Engineering Methods, Design Engineering and Process Engineering.  The Engineering Methods department is responsible for design and analysis methods that shape our future aero engine modules. We work mainly in technology projects where we apply methods to design new products and develop new Engineering Methods in the fields Aerothermodynamics, Solid Mechanics including Material testing and Process Simulation. Today we are 25 employees of which a significant number have a PhD degree.

The mission of our function is to assure that GKN can provide competitive low weight products with state of the art mechanical properties and aerodynamic functionality, where performance and noise are key issues. We also support process development with advanced simulation capabilities. The broad spectrum of our product offer demands state of the art research and development as well as specialist competence in the disciplines aerothermodynamics, aero acoustics, process simulation, solid mechanics and material testing. This is realized with our strategy to take part and lead international research programs and by building a strong competence network with national and international research institutes and universities. We work actively together with the core engineering departments within GKN to bring new technology in to product development programs.

Key Responsibilities

Key responsibilities

We are looking for an Engineer with strong competence in fluid or solid mechanics. In particular we want someone with experience in process simulation method development. GKN works with many manufacturing methods where simulation of the processes will be a key part of future developments; metal forming, ECM, heat treatment, machining, welding and additive manufacturing to mention some.

You will from the start work with development of methods to support process development for Additive manufacturing product technology, but will participate in the teams work on other processes both in research and problem solving issues.

The work is done in internal technology development projects, technology demonstrators and in research collaborations often done in bilateral or multilateral collaboration with our partners in the EU as well as in the USA. 


Required knowledge/experience

  • You are an engineer with a degree in Fluid and /or Solid Mechanics preferably with strong industrial experience in the above areas.
  • Research experience with a PhD in the field and experience of Additive Manufacturing process is considered favorable
  • You have an interest to develop within the field of process simulation and work in close collaboration with Additive Manufacturing process development. 
  • You have a good understanding of the customers’ needs and a good ability to communicate with those as well as with our research partners
  • You have a strong drive to develop, validate, present and implement new methods, tools and the theories on which they are based
  • You are proficient in English, which the GKN Group language
  • Knowledge of Swedish is considered favourable
